Mainstream news is the opposite of what Jefferson intended. Blogging — that’s another story 11/22/07

JeffersonMy article this week at Pajamas Media highlights that while many journalists boast of how central they are to our democracy, today’s journalism is very different from what Thomas Jefferson intended. In fact, it is almost completely the opposite in three fundamental ways: the role of the press, the voices that matter, and the importance of opinions. While Jefferson said that he would prefer “newspapers without a government” to “government without newspapers,” he did not imagine a journalism that was so favorably disposed to government, nor one that presented only one view while claiming it to be “the truth.” No doubt, he would have preferred “bloggers without a government” even more.
