The government-control freaks who are fighting the FCC’s move to allow more media buyouts don’t realize the war is over. They lost. 10/19/07

About thirty years ago, federal bureaucrats decided they were smarter than the Founding Fathers who wrote the First Amendment. They concluded that the real threat to free speech was not government, but companies that might end-up with a louder, more influential voice than the government. So the FCC invented an imaginary boogeyman, the all-powerful “media conglomerate” that could brainwash the unwashed masses. They passed regulations to protect us from this never-spotted monster, including one that has prevented the same company from owning a newspaper and local TV station in the same town. This made an already non-competitive news business even less competitive by preventing more successful, more customer-satisfying media companies from buying out others.

Now, the FCC is realizing that it has no choice but to eliminate this rule, so that some newspapers may be bought out by at least some company instead of going out of business entirely. This has not stopped control freaks like FCC Commissioner Michael Copps from continuing to freak, oblivious to the fact that they have lost the war. These days, hardly any media company would even want to buy a newspaper — an investment so poor that financial companies like Morgan Stanley have been eliminating the jobs of the analysts who study the sector. And now, the Internet promises to provide so many alternative voices in news that the idea of an all-powerful organization that controls our speech is unimaginable. Well, almost. Beware of the control freaks. Beware of government regulation of the Internet. (Hat tip: Aaron Hanscom, Pajamas Media)

>>They passed regulations to protect us from this never-spotted monster, including one that has prevented the same company from owning a newspaper and local TV station in the same town..

and and they were proven right too..

We see it today with CTV, Globe&Mail, Bell , Sympatico in Canada.. where the news media tends not to defend the abused citizens wrongfully because it tries to support Bell.. But the CBC news does not mind telling the negative truth about Bell.
