Murdoch is just warming-up. Your local Fox TV web site may replace ALL news as we know it 8/16/07

If Rupert Murdoch were Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Zajac and I were a contestant, I’d be shouting, “Rupert, I’ve seen enough letters. It spells ‘Oh my God! News Corp really DOES want it all.'” Increasingly, it appears that he sees a day when all news outlets have converged onto the Internet, and we will all log onto http://www.MyFox[YourCityHere].com to receive ALL the general news we get today — national news, international news, financial news, metro area news, human interest stories, crime/sex/violence news, entertainment news, local sports, local weather — ALL of it. Replacing EVERYTHING — metro newspapers, national newspapers, TV networks, local broadcast TV, cable TV. One-stop shopping for all news except the emerging hyperlocal news and news of family and friends (whoops — scratch that — News Corp already owns MySpace).

The latest indication of Murdoch’s breathtakingly ambitious plan is Variety’s report that News Corp, in addition to operating the web sites of its own owned-and-operated local TV stations, will adapt 160 of its local affiliates’ sites to the MyFox platform and branding. This at a time when the other TV networks are beginning to question their loyalties to their affiliates, with CBS’ Les Moonves recently saying “we feel the wave of the future is getting as much distribution as we can…we should be nonexclusive and get our content out there.”

Now consider that Murdoch and Moonves might both know exactly what they are doing. Murdoch will keep his affiliates and transform them into news machines. Moonves will drop his pesky affiliates that have been grabbing ad space from his profitable CBS entertainment programming simply to perform the soon-to-be-unnecessary task of broadcasting. So, unless Murdoch is at the wheel of a local affiliate and the network is spelled “F-O-X,” it might just be headed for mis-fortune.
