CNN cable news will offer itself as a sacrifice to the religion of Journalism rather than do what it must to survive – compete as a liberal news outlet 6/12/07

An article in Advertising Age correctly suggests that, unless things change, web-based CNN.com will ultimately cannibalize all of CNN cable TV’s news business because it delivers the same primary benefit — breaking news — only better. Sounds right to me, especially when you consider that eventually all media will converge onto the Internet, forcing 2 CNN products with the same reason-for-being to compete against each other.

So, what’s the answer to CNN’s problems? Predictably, the article goes on to do something so typical of elites who drink the Kool-Aid of Journalism dogma – refer to Fox News’ incredible success while trashing Fox’s tactics and assuring us that these tactics are beneath them. You can just feel the contempt: “Fox News built its audience by realizing it didn’t need to rely solely on news, larding its shows with plenty of opinion and hiring hosts unshy about expressing their views…[CNN has] struggled to find a new approach that doesn’t feel like just the liberal version of Fox News.” Who but journalists ever said that opinions did not qualify as “news” or that anyone should be shy about expressing their views? And, who but journalists does not understand that CNN’s liberal tilt might be a key reason why CNN has not lost all of its viewers to Fox? According to Pew Research, viewers surely get it: liberals find CNN more believable than conservatives by a 2-to-1 margin, and conservatives find Fox more believable than liberals by the same 2-to-1 margin. Earth to CNN: If you’ve got it, flaunt it! (Hat tips: Chris Bachelder, Larry Hallas)
