Bloggers are forcing newspaper journalists to become human 5/20/07

When we pick-up news from friends and neighbors, it is our nature to “consider the source.” We weigh our past experience with individuals, then decide whether we will believe the news they tell us at face value (i.e. if we believe them to be “credible”), or instead wait to hear it from another source that is more trustworthy, accurate, fair, or compatible with our worldviews. This need we have to consider the source has manifested itself on several occasions throughout the history of news. The great editors like Horace Greeley, anchors like Walter Cronkite, talk radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh, cable news hosts like Keith Olbermann, and syndicated op-ed columnists all owe some of their success to fulfilling this need for news consumers to know where the news-teller is “coming from,” for the purposes of weighing how seriously to take their words. This trend is surfacing again, on the Internet. Bloggers are becoming new human faces of news, with credibility that we assess and weigh. According to a Swedish panel of journalists, this new tendency to “consider the blogger” now “spills over to traditional media.” This may have big implications for newspapers, which been operating for decades as if the reputations of their papers alone are sufficient for readers to assume they are reading the truth. But increasingly, readers will be taking a closer look at the bylines, holding individual reporters responsible, and then judging papers based on their selection of reporters.
