Citizen-Generated news is one more step toward MSM extinction 3/21/07

Posted by Steve Boriss in Journalism, Roles.

The trend toward mainstream news outlets soliciting citizens to send in material is one more development that begs the question of why these outlets will need to exist at all in the future. It highlights that they are no longer the only ones who can produce reports, and reminds us they have never been able to catch all the news, or to be everywhere at all times. This citizen-generated formula could have long-term staying power if mainstream outlets remained the only way to distribute news, but the Internet has destroyed that advantage for them as well. As discussed in the articles on this site, the word “media” is derived from a Latin term meaning “in the middle,” pointing precisely to the problem. The news media need to find new reasons for us to continue to use them as “middlemen” that stand between us and news events.
