Reassessing Cole Campbell’s Vision 3/11/07

Posted by Steve Boriss in Journalism.

To paraphrase philosopher George Santayana, “those who don’t know history are destined to reinvent it.” Such was the tragic fate of the late Cole Campbell, one of the leading proponents of the “Public Journalism” movement. After a career of shaking-up newsrooms with bursts of creativity that unnerved many but accomplished little, he retired to academia where he began to figure out what his point was in the first place. According to this article on his recent passing, it was that newspapers should primarily be engaged in the process of helping citizens identify and solve public policy problems — a conclusion Thomas Jefferson reached more than 200 years ago.
